Historical Buildings

Many historical monuments are located in the Old Town. Among others some facilities belong to the university of Heidelberg, the oldest university of Germany such as the “Old University” of Heidelberg with its auditorium in neo-Renaissance-style or the “Studentenkarzer”, a former prison for students or the University Library.

On the eastern edge of the old town is one of the old city gates, the Karlstor which has been already built in 1781.

Here in “Hauptstrasse” , the main street, opposite the Heiliggeistkirche stands the building “Zum Ritter”, the oldest surviving town house of Heidelberg –
built in the year 1592 and hence represents the oldest building in the city.
